Performed in repertory with The Piano Teacher, Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women follows an old woman as she reflects on a life filled with optimism, shame, and regret while on her deathbed. In the first act, the other two women attending to her simply listen, chiming in with their opinions and reactions, but in the second act they become personifications of the old woman from earlier in her life. The lighting for this show primarily stayed in the world of realism in the first act through the use of natural colors and interior angles, dipping into the abstract every so often as the old woman reflected on a particularly poignant memory. The lighting transitioned fully into the abstract realm of the old woman’s mind through the use of texture at the end of the first act as she passed away, and the lighting for the second act became a reflection of the old woman’s bedroom as perceived by her mind.
