Two Sisters and a Piano by Nilo Cruz tells the story of Maria Celia, an accomplished novelist, and her sister Sofia, a talented pianist. They are under permanent house arrest after being imprisoned for two years due to Maria Celia speaking out against the regime during the presidency of communist Fidel Castro. As time goes on, Maria Celia and Sofia’s relationship is put to the test as they struggle to maintain their hope as they remain locked in the house together. The lighting design for Two Sisters supported the two main worlds of the play: the cold, trapped, and uneasy world of Maria Celia and Sofia's home, and the wistful and longing world of the letters Maria Celia receives from her husband, which is the closest form of escape that she can legally get.
